Visiting Friars Court

Explore the beauty, history, and charm of Friars Court

Discover Friars Court

Friars Court is surrounded by three acres of tranquil gardens, set within the remaining arms of a 500-year-old moat. Visitors are welcome to attend one of our public open days or arrange a private visit with a guided garden tour.

The grounds feature a variety of lawns, beds, borders, and specimen trees, arranged to create a series of smaller, garden room–style spaces, each with its own subtly distinct character. These include the newly created Labyrinth Garden. Beyond the front of the house lie the moat ponds, filled with water lilies and surrounded by native marginal plants, along with two living willow tunnels.

Garden Tour

Between May and September, the grounds of Friars Court are open for private tours by appointment by organised clubs (such as gardening clubs, WI or U3A), groups of friends (minimum of 12 people), or larger parties of up to 48.

Owner, Charles Willmer, will guide visitors on a gentle guided walk around the gardens, sharing insights into the history of his home, the development of the gardens, and life on the estate.

A guided tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and follows a level, wheelchair-friendly route. After the tour, guests are invited to continue exploring the gardens and revisit the private museum in the Coach House, where artefacts dating back to Roman times offer further insight into the long and fascinating history of Friars Court.

Groups may also choose to enjoy a traditional homemade cream tea. This includes freshly baked scones served with strawberry jam and whipped cream, along with a zesty lemon drizzle cake — all baked by Charles on the morning of your visit. Tea and coffee are included, and special dietary requirements can be catered for by prior arrangement.
